Photos: Inside the deadly Israeli invasion of Jenin

A look inside the Jenin refugee camp, as Israel continues a devastating offensive, the likes of which residents say they haven’t seen in years.

The ongoing Israeli military operation in Jenin and its adjacent refugee camp and villages, aimed at cracking down on the Palestinian armed resistance, has killed at least 14 Palestinians according to the Health Ministry. It has been close to two weeks since the Israeli army launched its latest offensive on the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, its refugee camp, and the surrounding towns. Dubbed Operation “Iron Wall,” the operation has featured a ground invasion and airstrikes that have caused massive destruction in the city, particularly the Jenin refugee camp. As of Friday, January 31, at least 19 Palestinians had been killed by the Israeli military, including a child as young as two years old. Dozens more have been injured, and thousands of Palestinians have been displaced from the refugee camp.

The Israeli attack, which Israel claims is to counter “terrorism,” began on the heels of a similar operation by the Palestinian Authority, which Palestinian officials said was aimed at targeting armed resistance groups in the camp and “restoring order.” Israeli officials have said that once the army completes its operation in the camp, it will remain there, indicating that this invasion may be different from the numerous operations Israel has launched on Jenin in recent years.

The successive Israeli and PA attacks have left residents in Jenin living in fear, not only for their lives but for what the future holds for them. The tactics the military has used, including mass destruction of infrastructure, airstrikes, the forcible displacement of residents, cutting off electricity and water, attacks on local hospitals, and more, have drawn sobering comparisons to the tactics employed in Gaza.

The following series of photographs, captured by Palestinian photographer Wahaj Bani Moufleh, shows a glimpse of what the reality has been like in the Jenin refugee camp for the past few weeks.

Smokes rises above the Jenin refugee camp, the primary target of Israel’s ongoing invasion of the northern West Bank city of Jenin. Israeli armored bulldozers have entered the camp, destroying infrastructure and homes, while witnesses report that some houses are being set on fire by Israeli forces. Drones are constantly hovering over the camp, while entrances and exits remain blocked by the Israeli forces, preventing health workers and journalists from entering the refugee camp. Israeli drones hover over the skies of Jenin in the occupied West Bank. Israel’s use of drone strikes on Jenin and other areas of the West Bank in recent days has signified an escalation of Israeli violence in the West Bank, with many fearing that the strikes are becoming commonplace. The drone strike took place amidst another military operation launched by the Palestinian Authority, which targeted resistance fighters in the Jenin camp over the last few weeks, resulting in more than a dozen Palestinians killed. Soon after the Israeli airstrike, the PA ceased its operation, and the Israeli operation dubbed “Iron Walls” began. (Wahaj Bani Moufleh/Activestills)
