US government funds AI tool for online fight against any criticism of HPV vaccinations

In the fight against vaccination critics, artificial intelligence is now also to be used in social media. This is to prevent any criticism quickly and also to direct debates in a certain direction that corresponds to the narratives. It should start with alleged "misinformation" about the HPV vaccination.

According to a recent report, the US government is investing $4 million in the development of an AI-supported tool that is intended to "immunize" users of social media against critical information about HPV vaccination. The project, led by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, is funded by the US Department of Health and runs from 2022 to 2027.

The goal is to train an AI system that recognizes "misinformation" about the HPV vaccination in social media. A study with 2500 parents is then to test how they can be "vaccinated" most effectively against such content. The researchers also want to transfer the results to other areas such as Covid-19 or child vaccinations.

Critics see the project as a questionable attempt to label legitimate concerns and experience reports on vaccination side effects as "misinformation". Mary Holland, co-author of a critical book on HPV vaccination, describes the project as a "sign of weakness" on the part of the health authorities: "If you censor information and call it misinformation, it shows that you have lost the scientific debate."

In fact, the project documents show that the researchers classify almost all critical statements about HPV vaccination as "misinformation" - regardless of the truth. Even verified media reports about vaccine side effects were classified in this way. The project raises questions about dealing with vaccination criticism and the role of AI in information control. Critics warn against a unilateral influence on public opinion and instead call for an open scientific debate on the benefits and risks of vaccinations.

Moreover, such AI systems could in the future be used in general against unpopular opinions. First against vaccination critics, then against climate skeptics and finally also against every oppositionist and every dissident in general. We are on the direct path into a total dictatorship of opinion, which considers and prevents controversies on given topics as undesirable.
