Hezbollah chief demands Muslim nations expel Swedish officials
Hassan Nasrallah’s comments came after Iraq expelled the Swedish ambassador in response to the latest desecration of the Quran in Stockholm
Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallahon 20 July called on all Arab and Muslim states to follow in Iraq’s footsteps and expelSwedish officials from their countries in protest against the latest Quran-burning demonstration in Stockholm.
“We are saddened by what happened today – a new ugly act. What we witnessed was a provocation to the feelings of Muslims, and it is clear that whoever burned or desecrated the Holy Quran was with the permission of the Swedish government. He is the same person who burned the Quran some time ago,” Nasrallah said.
"If we want the burning and desecration of the Holy Quran that happened in Sweden not to be repeated, then all Arab and Islamic countries must do what Iraq did," he added.
The resistance leader also called for demonstrations outside Swedish diplomatic offices against the desecration of the Quran.
His speech came on the occasion of the second day of Ashura commemorations.
On Thursday, supporters of Iraq’s popular Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr stormed the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, scaling its walls and setting fire to the building. The attack came in response to the Swedish government’s decision to approve a protest outside Iraq’s embassy in Sweden where organizers desecrated the Quran and the Iraqi flag.
The protest was planned by Salwan Momika – a Sweden-based Iraqi refugee allegedly linked to the Mossad – who last month drew worldwide condemnation after burning the Quran in front of Stockholm’s largest mosque on Eid al-Adha.
On 20 July, Momika again desecrated the Islamic holy book before wiping his feet with pictures of the Iraqi flag, Sadr, and Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iraqi demonstrators shouted curse words and anger at Momika as he carried out the act.
Baghdad condemned the storming and burning of the Swedish embassy as a severe security threat, making arrests and prosecuting individuals involved.
In response to the desecration of the Quran and Iraq’s flag, Iraq expelled its Swedish envoy and recalled its diplomatic staff from the Nordic country.
"This is the responsibility of us all. The entire world should see how we embrace … our scripture when it is subjected to desecration," Nasrallah went on to say.
