The Highwire Covered the Toxic Coating 'Apeel'
Update on info I have been sharing about toxic 'Apeel'
Thursday, Sept. 21, The Highwire did an in-depth story about the toxic coating being put on our fresh produce called âApeelâ. I was so glad to see this story going out to millions of people who watch The Highwire. Everything that was reported on is what I have been talking about and writing about since May of this year about this new way they are making our food toxic. In case you are new subscriber you can go back and read the 6 previous blogs I wrote about toxic âApeelâ. See the list and the links at the bottom of the blog.

When I first wrote about toxic âApeelâ I received some skepticism that it was really being sprayed on our produce including organic produce and that it was as toxic as I was reporting. And many asked me how I was getting my information. The best place for information about the latest on what is happening to your health is Childrenâs Health Defense (that is where I heard about âApeelâ first) and The Highwire (they had mentioned if back in May and now they have in-depth reporting on it). The reporting on C.H.D. and The Highwire had been consistently accurate and the first to be reporting. I watch and listen to them intensely and start talking about what they are reporting and then weeks or months later other people are talking about the topic they have reported on.
Here is some of the information that was in the report from The Highwire:
In most of the world and places that follow the E.U. the foods that will be covered with toxic âApeelâ are: citrus, avocados, pineapple, papaya, bananas, mango, pomegranate and melons. The U.S. and the rest of the world, all fresh produce is eligible without restrictions.
E.P.A. Product Label reads: The active ingredients in âOrganipeelâ is citric acid, 0.66% by weight. Other ingredients: 99.34% by weight.
O.M.R.I (Organic Material Review Institution) is a nonprofit organization that looks at all the things that are in food and products coming out to see if they are in fact organic. They label and classify it as a âcrop, pest, weed and disease control substanceâ. They categorize it as a fungicide.
The âApeelâ website says it is made of purified mono and diglycerides that have been derived from plants oils to mimic the natural protection of peels. What are mono glycerides and are they safe to eat? Which food contain monoglycerides? They are mostly in process foods such as: coffee creamers, whipped toppings, frozen dinners, candy, soft drinks, frosting, and chewing gum. Not anything classified as healthy foods and nothing I eat.
Mono and diglycerides contain small amounts of trans fats. They are classified as emulsifiers, not lipids so the F.D.A. ban does not apply to them. As trans-fat is phased out, food companies may turn to mono and diglycerides as a low-cost alternative.
Plus the food that is being coating with the toxic âApeelâ is being âsanitizedâ. They are sanitizing it with a solvent one of which is ethyl acetate which lists these side effects: eye irritation, it is highly flammable liquid or vapor, specific organ toxicity from single exposure and central nervous system category 3. Plus may cause drowsiness and dizziness.
The F.D.A. papers have the patent for the method of sanitizing and preserving produce and other agricultural product listed as: alcohol, ethanol, methanal, acetone, isopropanol or ethyl acetate.
I have shared the F.D.A. approval papers for the toxic âApeelâ in many of the past blogs I shared. And on The Highwire they reported about the toxic ingredients as listed in the F.D.A. papers as I have shared. When sharing this information with certain people I was accused of sharing false information that could cause unneeded fear about the product. Here is the list of the ingredients as listed in the F.D.A. papers.
Contains: Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium, Palladium and Mercury
Contains: Citric Acid which is almost always derived from GMO corn
Contains: Soap, sodium oleate (yes, extra salt, sodium in your diet)
Contains: Ethyl acetate, a flavoring agent, used in solvents, paints, lacquers, perfumes and processed foods, which is toxic if ingested or inhaled
Heptane: Used in test fuels, petroleum refinements, cements and inks
Contains: Toluene, a highly toxic chemical with a wide range of detrimental health effects when inhaled, swallowed or when comes in contact with skin or eyes

Since I have been talking about, writing about and sharing about the toxic âApeelâ I have seen it become more widely known and that is great. The more people who know about this the more people will not accept this poison on our foods. I was delighted a couple days ago, when someone (I do not know personally) said she had made copies on my previous blog and was handing the out at stores and markets to inform people about toxic âApeelâ.
The general public seems to be horrified about this toxic substance being put on our produce and especially our organic produce. However, I have been disappointed with the âhealth food peopleâ who seem to not be to concern about it. I have been told (when I have shared my blogs with these âhealth food peopleâ) that I am spreading fear that my using the words âtoxic Apeelâ is to harsh. Well, I will always put âtoxicâ before âApeelâ when writing about it. And I will continue to tell people just how bad it is for us to consume.
In case you do not know, The Highwire is Del Bigtrees show that is on every Thursday at 2 PM (ET). You watch it on the internet. He has millions of viewers. I have been watching The Highwire since Del started the show. Here is the link to watch The Highwire:
The Good News
Some grocery stores are having nothing to do with the toxic âApeelâ on their produce. One such store is Natural Grocers. They have signs in their store that read: âWe do not sell produce treated with organicpeel or apeelâ.
