âTodayâs threats facing Europe are more complex than ever, and they are all interconnected,â said Preparedness and Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib as she unveiled a new strategy for dealing with future disasters.
While the commission is keen not to be seen as alarmist, Lahbib said itâs important âto make sure people have essential supplies for at least 72 hours in a crisis.â She listed food, water, flashlights, ID papers, medicine and shortwave radios as things to stock.

With B-2 stealth bombers and a host of support planes sent to the Chagos Islands' air base on Diego Garcia, US President Trump is sending a message to Iran
The US has moved significant military assets in the Middle East following Donald Trumpâs two-month deadline to Iran over a nuclear deal. Crucially, five B-2 stealth bombers have been sent to Diego Garcia, the British Indian Ocean territory currently at the centre of UK negotiations with Mauritius. A further seven C-17 aircraft have also been tracked landing on the remote atoll, suggesting transportation of equipment, personnel and supplies and refuelling aircraft have been repositioned to strategic locations.
The Pentagon recently ordered the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group to extend its deployment in the Red Sea by a month, and a second strike group, led by the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, is heading for the Middle East. The unusual surge in military assets comes 10 days after the US launched heavy strikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

US Deploys B-2 Bombers to Diego Garcia â Preparations for Strike on Iran?
Open-source satellite imagery produced by Planet Labs on March 25 showed the presence of up to seven US Air Force B-2 Spirit strategic bombers on the island of Diego Garcia â three on a parking apron / live ordnance loading area and probably four more in hardened shelters. Alongside them on the tarmac were several KC-135 Stratotanker air refueling aircraft and three C-17 transport planes.
This build-up sparked some social media to wonder if the deployment of these strategic assets signaled a readiness to increase US strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen. However, others suggested that the presence of refueling aircraft indicated the potential for a longer-range strike â with Iran being the favorite as the intended target.
Military analysts note that any US strike on Iranâs underground dispersed nuclear facilities would necessitate coordinated, long-range precision attacks by bombers supported and protected by aircraft from pre-positioned naval platforms, i.e., one or more of 12 full-size aircraft carriers in the US Navy fleet.
This analysis came amid reports that the US Carrier Strike Group 1, led by the USS Carl Vinson, would shortly move to the region and be supplemented by Carrier Strike Group 8 centered around the USS Harry S Truman.

Iran responds to Trump's nuclear talks proposal as U.S. sends bombers to region
Iran delivered a formal written response to President Trump's letter proposing new nuclear talks and threatening consequences if a deal is not reached swiftly, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday.
Why it matters: Trump gave Iran a two-month deadline to sign a new nuclear deal or face potential military action in his letter, sent three weeks ago.
Driving the news: Iran delivered its response via the Gulf Sultanate of Oman, which duly notified the U.S., a source with knowledge of the issue confirmed to Axios.
The Omanis briefed the U.S. on the messages they received from the Iranians and will deliver the Iranian letter to the White House in the coming days, the source said.
The source did not offer details on the nature of the Iranian response. The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Araghchi said in a news conference that Iran maintains its position that it won't negotiate directly with the Trump administration so long as Trump's "maximum pressure" campaign is in place, but is willing to hold indirect talks.
State of play: Trump and his top advisers have left the door open for talks while also using the threat of military force.
In recent days, the U.S. military sent several B-2 stealth bombers to the Diego Garcia military base in the Indian Ocean in a deployment a U.S. official said was "not disconnected" from Trump's two-month deadline.
The B-2 bombers can carry huge bunker buster bombs that would be a key element in any possible military action against Iran's underground nuclear facilities.
A spokesperson for U.S. Strategic Command confirmed the deployment to Axios and said Stratcom "routinely conducts global operations in coordination with other combatant commands, services, and participating U.S. government agencies to deter, detect and, if necessary, defeat strategic attacks against the United States and its allies."
