There was once a time, in the golden glow of our democratic ideals, that we reveled in the notion that every citizen had a voice and a right to privacy.
Now, we find ourselves in a tragicomedy worthy of Sophocles, where the very instruments of our supposed freedom are but Trojans that have since penetrated the city walls. As we engage in the digital agora, where the likes of the CIA, NSA, and Israelâs Unit 8200 skulk about, disguised as mere spectators while they glean secrets from our most intimate conversations.
The most prolific App used by political activists and dissenters is the Signal App.
With over 100 million downloads and endorsements from luminaries like Edward Snowden and Elon Musk, weâre led to believe that our digital whispers are safe from prying eyes.
The Signal Foundation, created in 2017 with $50m in funding from WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton and according to Acton, Signal exists to âprotect free expression and enable secure global communication through open source privacy technologyâ.
What is interesting about the connection between WhatsApp and Signal is that the Israeli Pegasus spyware of NSO Group is able to exploit the vulnerabilities of WhatsApp and access the information and data from devices such as Apples, iPhone. Itâs rather ironic that the founder of WhatsApp would later create Signal.
Itâs also ironic that Signal became the App and the means of communication for those whom were opposed to vaccine mandates and lockdowns during Covid. Perhaps itâs now time to ditch the Signal App!
