Freed Palestinian Prisoner Exposes a 'Prison Worse Than Guantánamo' — Harrowing Testimonies from Zionist Detention Centers

News - Middle East: In a harrowing testimony, freed Palestinian prisoner Qassem Matar revealed to Al-Masirah the brutal conditions and systematic torture endured by detainees in Zionist occupation prisons since their arrest after October 7, describing experiences that “surpass the horrors of Guantánamo.”
Matar explained that he and hundreds of others were detained while receiving medical care in hospitals and civilian facilities, “with no connection whatsoever to military activities,” as the occupation fabricated charges merely “because they remained steadfast under bombardment and siege in Gaza.”
Describing his release, Matar said he felt a “mixture of joy and grief” — joy for regaining freedom and sorrow for the suffering of his people. He praised the Palestinian resistance and its allies, expressing confidence that they would continue exerting pressure on the Zionist entity to implement all terms of the prisoner exchange deal, free every detainee, and rebuild Gaza.
Matar recounted the torture he endured: “We were subjected to every form of torment — beaten, attacked by dogs, bound hand and foot, and blindfolded for three consecutive months. There is a prison worse than Guantánamo.” He noted that the abuse continued even as prisoners were transferred between facilities, emphasizing that what they experienced “defies description and constitutes a crime against humanity.”
He concluded with a heartfelt appeal: “We call upon the resistance to redouble efforts to free all prisoners. None of us will rest until every captive is liberated from this unjust and inhumane oppression.”
Since the escalation of the war on Gaza, human rights organizations have documented a surge in arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and collective punishment targeting Palestinians in the besieged Strip and across the occupied territories. Detainees, including civilians, medical staff, and displaced persons, have been held under harsh conditions and subjected to physical and psychological torment designed to break their spirit.
