Initial reports of devastation are shocking

Friday saw a massive return of internally displaced Palestinians, with hundreds of thousands streaming back to Gaza City and northern areas despite the overwhelming devastation. Scenes of destroyed buildings and rubble are widespread.

The Mayor of Khan Younis announced in a press conference that 85% of the governorate is destroyed. The city faces the task of removing approximately 400,000 tons of rubble, with 300 kilometers of water networks and 75% of the sewage network destroyed. The municipality must also deal with over 350,000 tons of waste.

The Gaza City Municipality reported that more than 85% of its heavy and medium machinery is destroyed, but efforts have begun to open some main streets, prioritizing water, sewage, and waste collection.

Aid Groups Ready to Begin Providing Relief to Gaza Under Cease-Fire

Israel will allow the United Nations to deliver larger amounts of humanitarian aid into Gaza starting on Sunday [or Saturday], according to a senior U.N. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the plans.

The cease-fire agreement reached on Thursday between Israel and Hamas contains stipulations for an increase of aid into Gaza and the reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

The U.N. has said about 170,000 metric tons of food, medicine and other aid supplies are staged and ready to be transported into the enclave.

Foreign Press Association reiterates call for media access to Gaza

The Foreign Press Association (FPA), which represents hundreds of media workers, has issued a statement: “With the halt in fighting, we renew our urgent call for Israel to open the borders immediately and allow international media free and independent access to the Gaza Strip,” it said.

“These demands have been repeatedly ignored, while our Palestinian colleagues have risked their lives to provide tireless and brave reporting from Gaza.”

The FPA has repeatedly asked for access to Gaza over the past two years, but Israel has denied any entry of foreign journalists to the besieged enclave.

The Israeli media is reporting on a ‘secret clause’ in the Gaza ceasefire deal that no one is talking about

The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas could collapse due to an alleged “secret clause” in the agreement that would allow Israel to resume the war, according to reports in the Arab and Hebrew-language Israeli media.

That so-called clause would reportedly be “activated” in the event that Hamas is unable to locate all the Israeli captives within the 72-hour window allotted to the Palestinian resistance group during the first part of the deal’s implementation.

On Friday, Al Jazeera’s Palestine Bureau Chief Walid al-Omary pointed out on the network’s live broadcast that the second article of the deal concerning the release of Israeli captives included a phrase in the Hebrew version about an undisclosed annex. According to al-Omary, if Hamas fails to release all Israeli captives, dead and alive, a “secret clause in appendix B” would be “activated”  (continue reading here).

36 Palestinians wounded in Israeli attack on olive harvesters in West Bank

Dozens of Palestinians, including journalists, were injured and six others arrested on Friday in attacks by Israeli settlers and the military in the occupied West Bank.

The assaults targeted olive harvesters all over the West Bank, and involved physical assaults, tear gas, and live ammunition. Three vehicles were also set ablaze. Israeli forces reportedly arrested six Palestinians while they were harvesting olives, after settlers attacked them at the site.

Attacks by extremist Jewish Israeli settlers typically increase around the olive harvest season, which falls in late September to mid-November.

Israel holding bodies of 735 Palestinians, says advocacy group

The National Campaign for the Retrieval of Palestinian and Arab War Victims’ Corpses and the Disclosure of the Fate of the Missing said Israeli authorities are holding the bodies of 735 people in cemeteries and refrigerators.

The cemeteries are made up of mass graves marked with numbers rather than names, and some of the bodies have been there since the 1967 war.

It is widely known that Israel employs the practice as a tactic for leverage in negotiations. The practice has long pained Palestinian families, who sometimes have to wait decades before receiving the bodies of their loved ones.

(Trump apparently thinks Israel is sick and twisted)

In March 2025, after a fragile ceasefire had begun, Trump posted a warning to Hamas on social media: “Release all of the Hostages now… and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you… Only sick and twisted people keep bodies, and you are sick and twisted!”.
