Live: Gaza death toll nears 50,700

Our live blog will shortly be closing until tomorrow morning.

Here are the day's key developments:

  • The death toll of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023 has reached 50,695, as another 26 people were killed in the last 24 hours, the enclave's health ministry has said.

  • It added that another 113 people have been admitted to hospital, bringing the number of people wounded in the war to 115, 338.

  • According to government media in Gaza, Israeli forces have killed 490 children in just 20 days, pushing the overall death toll to 1,350 since Israel broke the ceasefire on March 18.

  • The death toll from Israeli strikes on Gaza since dawn has climbed to 43, as relentless bombardment leaves more bodies buried under the rubble.

  • Israel's barring of the entry of vaccines into Gaza is putting 602,000 children at risk of "permanent paralysis, and chronic disabilities" the enclave's health ministry said today.

  • A 14-year-old Palestinian-American, Omar Mohammad Rabea, was shot dead by an Israeli settler in Turmus Ayya, a West Bank town, on Sunday. The incident marks yet another surge in settler violence and confrontations between Palestinians and settlers across the occupied territory.

  • Two people have been killed in an Israeli attack targeting an engineering vehicle which was travelling towards the southern Lebanese town of Naquora in the Tyre area, the country's National News Agency is reporting.

  • For more than a month, Israel has blocked life-saving aid from reaching Gaza, leaving the territory on the brink of catastrophe. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, says it is still distributing what little remains—but supplies are vanishing fast.

  • Israel has detained two British members of parliament and refused entry to the officials who were visiting as part of a parliamentary delegation, British Foreign Minister David Lammy said in a statement late on Saturday.

  • A source close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that all Israeli captives in Gaza are being held in tunnels. The source speaking to the Israeli daily Haaretz, boasted that Israeli forces have seized 40 percent of Gaza’s territory and are making significant progress.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu touched down in Washington on Sunday—after taking a detour of roughly 400 kilometres to avoid airspace over countries that might enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant.

Israeli officials feared that if Netanyahu’s plane were forced into an emergency landing, nations like Ireland, Iceland, and the Netherlands could move to detain him, Haaretz reported.

The ICC warrant is linked to Israel’s war on Gaza and allegations of war crimes.

Microsoft's 50th anniversary celebration on Friday was interrupted by pro-Palestine protesting employees over the company’s connections to Israel.

"You are a war profiteer. Stop using AI for genocide," Microsoft employee Ibtihal Aboussad shouted while AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman delivered a speech to an audience that included Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

"Mustafa, shame on you," Aboussad said as she walked toward the stage. "50,000 people have died and Microsoft powers this genocide in our region."

"Thank you for your protest, I hear you," Suleyman responded. Aboussad continued, shouting that Suleyman and "all of Microsoft" had blood on their hands before being escorted out of the event.

The protest at the event in Redmond, Washington, marks the latest criticism of the tech industry's involvement in providing artificial intelligence technology to the Israeli military.

Another deadly Israeli attack has struck southern Lebanon, with at least two people killed in the village of Zibqin, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

The initial toll stood at one fatality, but the ministry later confirmed that a wounded person had succumbed to their injuries.

This latest strike follows last week’s Israeli assault on Beirut—its first since a fragile truce was declared in November—raising fears that tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border could spiral further.

Belgium’s Prime Minister Bart De Wever has made it clear: if Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu set foot in Belgium, he wouldn’t be arrested.

Speaking to VRT television on Thursday, De Wever dismissed the idea, saying practical considerations take precedence over ethics when it comes to international diplomacy.

“There is such a thing as realpolitik. Within that framework, practical considerations prevail over ethical ones,” he said. “I don’t think there is a single European country that would arrest Mr Netanyahu if he went there. France, for example, wouldn’t—and I don’t think we would either.”

His remarks came as Hungary, just ahead of Netanyahu’s state visit, announced it had begun the process of withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC), raising further questions about Europe’s stance on war crimes and accountability.

Avichay Adraee, the Israeli army’s spokesperson, has announced that residents of Deir el-Balah have been ordered to evacuate immediately.

Calling it a “final advance warning before the attack,” Adraee made it clear that Israeli forces will strike “with great force” any area used to launch rockets from Gaza.

He told Palestinians to flee “immediately south” to shelters in al-Mawasi—designated by Israel as a ‘safe zone’ despite repeated Israeli attacks there since the war began

Hamas has released a statement condemning the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza, directly blaming the Trump administration for enabling what it calls a "war of extermination" against Palestinians.

The group accused Israeli forces of carrying out massacres in Rafah, Khan Younis, Deir el-Balah, and the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza. It said the US government under Donald Trump was providing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration with the political and military backing to continue its assault.

"The administration of US President Donald Trump bears direct responsibility for the horrific massacres committed by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," Hamas said.

Hamas also called on Unicef to intervene to stop the killing of Palestinian children, urging Arab and Islamic nations—as well as the broader international community—to take decisive action to end what it described as a campaign of extermination.

A 14-year-old Palestinian-American, Omar Mohammad Rabea, was shot dead by an Israeli settler in Turmus Ayya, a West Bank town, on Sunday. The incident marks yet another surge in settler violence and confrontations between Palestinians and settlers across the occupied territory.

Rabea, along with two other teens, was shot at the entrance to the town. The mayor, Adeeb Lafi, confirmed that two of the teens were rushed to a medical centre, while the third, Rabea, was detained by Israeli soldiers before being pronounced dead.

"Two of them were transported by ambulance to a nearby medical center and then to the hospital. The army arrived at the scene and detained the third injured boy, who is 14 years old and holds US citizenship," Lafi said.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed Rabea's death, attributing it to "occupation forces." Israeli military officials have yet to comment.

Settler violence in the West Bank, including frequent raids on Palestinian villages and Bedouin camps, has escalated since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023. Despite international condemnation and sanctions from European countries and the Biden administration, Israel’s settler violence continues unchecked.

Hamas fired a barrage of rockets at southern Israel on Sunday, calling the action a direct response to Israeli "massacres" of civilians in Gaza.

Israel’s military confirmed that around ten projectiles were launched, but most were intercepted. However, Israeli Channel 12 reported that one rocket struck the southern city of Ashkelon, causing significant damage.

Israeli emergency services reported treating one person for shrapnel injuries and noted scattered debris and smashed car windows across city streets. Videos released by emergency teams showed the aftermath of the attack.

A source close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that all Israeli captives in Gaza are being held in tunnels.

The source speaking to the Israeli daily Haaretz, boasted that Israeli forces have seized 40 percent of Gaza’s territory and are making significant progress.

The source suggested that US President Donald Trump would not pressure Netanyahu to end the ongoing war, signalling that Israel’s military campaign shows no signs of slowing.

The source also touched on Turkey’s growing influence in Syria, expressing concerns over the establishment of Turkish military bases equipped with air defence systems.

Israel is keen to prevent such developments, though the source stopped short of suggesting an attack if these bases were established, stating that no such bases currently exist.

On Lebanon, the source revealed plans for three working groups to address key issues: Israel’s refusal to withdraw from five contested points, Lebanese prisoners held in Israel, and the 13 disputed points along the Blue Line, which marks the border between Israel and Lebanon.

This story did not start today. It began a year ago - on 19 March 2024, to be exact. It has been a year of war, fear, hunger, loss, displacement and destruction in Gaza - a year of death lurking around every corner.

I saw death with my own eyes. I only realised I was still alive when my water broke in a moment of sheer terror.

A missile had struck right beside our home. The blast was so powerful it blew the door open, and shrapnel came flying in as the acrid smell of smoke filled the air, mingling with the metallic scent of blood.

I was certain it was over. But I was not afraid for myself; I was afraid for my baby, who had not even seen the sun yet.

Would we be torn apart, my unborn child, my husband and I? I lost control, screaming: “We’re burning. We’re burning.”

Tens of thousands took to the streets in Morocco's capital, Rabat, to protest Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza. The demonstration, organised by the Justice and Development party, was the largest pro-Palestinian rally in Rabat for months.

Chanting and drumming echoed through the city as protesters marched down Mohammed V Avenue near parliament, waving flags—including one bearing the image of the late Hamas chief, Yahya Sinwar.

Children carried white shrouds stained red to symbolise the young victims of the war, while the death toll in Gaza has now reached 50,695, according to the Health Ministry.

Protestors called for the liberation of Palestine, labelling Netanyahu a criminal, and demanding an end to the Gaza siege and the immediate entry of aid.

Moroccan ties with Israel, established in 2020 under the US-brokered Abraham Accords, were also under fire, with many chanting that such relations were an act of “treason.”

Save the Children’s’s spokesperson in Gaza has delivered a grim warning, stating that 15,000 children have been killed in the ongoing conflict. In an interview with Al Jazeera, the official described the appalling scale of displacement, with 1.9 million people now uprooted from their homes.

“Indiscriminate attacks on civilians and health workers have left no safe place for children, civilians, or health staff in Gaza,” they said.

The humanitarian crisis continues to escalate as over 50 trucks of aid remain stuck, unable to reach those in desperate need, said Save the Children’s.
