After North Korean soldiers were captured by Ukrainian forces on January 12, 2025, who were fighting alongside Russians, as part of an official military link between Moscow and Pyongyang, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Kiev forces also captured two Chinese soldiers who were fighting alongside Russian troops.

South Korea’s spy agency estimates that about 300 North Korean soldiers have died and 2,700 have been wounded during the fighting in Ukraine, marking North Korea’s first large-scale military involvement since the 1950 Korean War.

Memos recovered from deceased North Korean soldiers have revealed orders to commit suicide rather than be captured, with one soldier reportedly shouting “General Kim Jong-un” before attempting to detonate a grenade to avoid capture.

To return to the current capture of two Chinese soldiers fighting alongside Russian troops, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that Kiev forces fought against six Chinese soldiers in Donetsk, adding that Ukraine believes there are “many more Chinese citizens in the occupier’s units than these two.”

Admittedly, the numbers are small for now, but they could be a vanguard, or a testing ground for Chinese forces in a contemporary war, military advisors or even mercenaries.

However, the latter hypothesis seems the most unlikely, given China’s low propensity to meddle in other people’s wars both at the national level and at the level of individuals.

Also given the restrictions on freedom and the lesser sensitivity to the very concept of one’s own and especially other people’s freedom that characterize the Chinese regime and people.

Officially, China has claimed to be impartial regarding Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, calling for a “peaceful and diplomatic resolution of the conflict.”

But in February 2022, just weeks before the Kremlin’s troops launched their all-out assault, Moscow and Beijing announced an “unlimited partnership agreement.”

Despite its official stance of neutrality, Beijing has been accused of secretly supplying Russia with weapons and drone parts, while also cutting off drone supplies to Ukraine.

China denies the accusations. The captured soldiers are the first Ukrainian prisoners of war reported by China.

True or deceptive as a message?

Russian war bloggers, however, have reported Chinese volunteers fighting for the Kremlin since at least March 2024, along with volunteers from Cuba, Colombia, and several other countries.

The fact is that this is at least an alarming sign of the direction events in Ukraine are taking, which appears to be moving towards a gradual but concrete alliance between Russia, China, and North Korea.

Which may not rule out the participation of other major players in the future, such as Iran, Yemen, and God knows who else.
