Acute malnutrition surges among Gaza’s children – War on Gaza Day 559

The UN’s humanitarian affairs agency’s (OCHA) update on the situation in Gaza paints a dire picture amid escalating attacks by Israeli forces and severe food shortages due to the Israeli military’s punitive blockade on all aid entering the war-torn territory.

“Food consumption in Gaza has sharply deteriorated due to the blockade on the entry of humanitarian aid and other critical supplies now in its seventh week,” OCHA said. “Consumption of key food groups – such as meat, poultry, dairy, vegetables, and fruits – remains critically low,” it added.

According to OCHA, in March, 3,696 Palestinian children were newly admitted for acute malnutrition, which marked a stark increase compared with the number in February, which was 2,027.

Twenty-year-old Mosab Audaily was serving a 13-month sentence in Israeli jails when he was pronounced dead last night at the Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheva in southern Israel, the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner Society said in a joint statement.

The statement noted that Audaily was detained on 22 March 2024 and was scheduled to be released in three days.

While the statement did not elaborate on how he died, it said Audaily died “as a result of the organized crimes that have been practiced by the Israeli occupation prisons in an unprecedented manner since the start of the ongoing genocide” in Gaza.

The Israeli occupation authorities have yet to comment on Audaily’s death.

According to Palestinian figures, at least 64 Palestinian detainees have died in Israeli captivity since October 2023, including at least 40 from Gaza.

Hassona is the subject of an upcoming documentary, “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” which will screen at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Her death has sparked widespread condemnation and an outpouring of grief from Gaza and around the world.

Despite repeated evacuation orders, the worsening conditions, and the fact that 11 relatives of hers were killed in an Israeli attack last year, Fatma Hassona refused to leave northern Gaza, staying behind to document the war. Amid the devastation, she was also preparing for her wedding – a celebration set for late April.

Anas al-Shareef, an Al Jazeera reporter based in Gaza, posted on X, honoring Hassona as someone who “never left the field since the beginning.” He noted that she “documented massacres through her lens amid bombardment and gunfire, capturing the people’s pain and screams in her photographs.”

Al-Shareef stated that Hassona confronted death daily “without retreating” until the day the Israeli army “carried out its final massacre against her.” He added, “The occupation doesn’t just kill people; it silences voices, erases images, and buries the truth.”

The General Authority of Civil Affairs informed the Palestinian Health Ministry of the deaths of the child, Jihad Adham Abdullah Adili, 17, and the young man, Saif Ghassan Jabr Adili, 19, adding that the army confiscated their bodies.

Media sources said that the army invaded the village of Osarin, southeast of Nablus on Thursday afternoon, sparking protests among local Palestinian youths.

The occupation army claimed that the slain and injured Palestinian youths were “throwing stones on a highway.”

Israeli minister says time has come to implement Trump’s Gaza plan

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has said Israel would not halt the war before accomplishing a “complete victory” in Gaza, which includes the destruction of Hamas and the return of all captives.

“The time has come to open the gates of hell on Hamas, to deepen the fighting until the complete occupation of the Strip, the elimination of Hamas, and the implementation of President Trump’s plan for the voluntary exit and rehabilitation of Gazans in another country,” he wrote on X. “Mr. Prime Minister, go ahead. Give the order.”

IDF Probe Into Killing of Asylum Seekers Finds Severe Lapses in Troops’ Conduct

The Israeli military (IDF) probe into the killing of three civilians on the Jordanian border last month shows lapses in the troops’ conduct, including action without accurate assessment and only partial adherence to rules of engagement.

After the incident, the bodies of the Ethiopian and Eritrean nationals were taken to Shura military base in central Israel, where they are still being held.

The army has so far refused to allow asylum seekers in Israel to identify the bodies of the three victims, whom they believe to be relatives.
