18 people have died of starvation in Gaza in the last 24 hours, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry; a total of at least 86 have died of malnutrition, 76 of them children, since October 2023, with famine-related deaths reaching 620, said Gaza’s Government Media Office.

IDF CARRIES OUT STRIKES IN DEIR AL-BALAH: Palestinian media reported that the IDF is carrying out airstrikes in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip. On Sunday morning, the army called on residents of Deir al-Balah to evacuate their homes, including areas where residents had not been previously asked to evacuate, and announced that it is “expanding its operations in areas where it had not previously operated.” Deir al-Balah has been largely spared the mass destruction that other Gaza cities have seen because Israel had reason to believe its hostages were located there.

Hamas Expected to Agree to Gaza Cease-fire Deal Soon, Israeli Officials Say
US special envoy for hostages Adam Boehler said in an interview with CNN, a deal is achievable and that he is optimistic. Boehler said that Israel demonstrated more flexibility in recent days, including by redrawing the maps of its proposed redeployment during the proposed 60-day cease-fire.
Israeli government sources also said that despite Hamas’ foot-dragging, they expect it to agree soon – though possibly only partially – to the latest proposal, which was submitted last Thursday night.
One key issue that could still delay a deal, according to senior Israeli officials, is the identity of the Palestinian prisoners* who will be freed in exchange for the 10 living hostages to be released – eight on the first day of the deal and two on day 50.
Aside from the issues of the prisoners and the troop redeployment, Israeli officials said two other issues are still in dispute: the amount of humanitarian aidthat will enter the Gaza Strip during the cease-fire and how it will be distributed to residents, and Hamas’ demand for international guarantees that Israel will negotiate seriously during the cease-fire on a deal to end the war.
*NOTE: Israel is currently holding over 9,000 Palestinian prisoners in inhumane conditionswhere many are systematically tortured. Israel has used torture consistently (including for children), since at least 1968. In the case of Gazan prisoners since October 7th, many were restrained so tightly for so long, that they required amputation of limbs; others were sodomized with burning hot objects.

The official expressed hope that such a deal could be finalized “this week.” The army is ready to show “flexibility” depending on the decisions made by Israel’s political leadership, the source said, without elaborating.

NETANYAHU SICK, WILL MISS HIS TRIAL SESSION MONDAY: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was diagnosed with intestinal inflammation and will have a 3-day rest, his office said on Sunday. According to Channel 12, the premier will not join Sunday’s Knesset meeting or his trial session before the Tel Aviv District Court scheduled for Monday. According to Ha’aretz, the latest delay means the prime minister won’t be cross-examined until after the court’s summer recess in September (read about Netanyahu’s corruption trial here).

Gaza-bound aid ship ‘Handala’ sabotaged before departure, activists say
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition says the Handala, a Gaza-bound aid ship, was sabotaged before its departure from Gallipoli, Italy.
A rope was found tightly wrapped around the engine propeller, and a corrosive chemical was discovered in the water tank, injuring two crew members.
Despite the attacks, the vessel has set sail towards Gaza, carrying international activists and humanitarian supplies including baby formula, medicine, and toys. The journey is expected to take about a week.
The International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza condemned the sabotage attempts and called on the international community to guarantee the vessel’s safe passage and prevent any acts of “Israeli piracy”.

The Handala arrives in Dénia in the province of Alicante, Spain, on July 14, 2024. (Denia.com)

Only 6 Reps Vote to for Amendment to Cut $500 Million in Military Aid to Israel
The amendment was introduced by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who argued that Israel should receive less funding from the US as Tel Aviv possesses nuclear weapons. “I’m entering amendments to strike $500 million more for nuclear-armed Israel. And it’s important to say nuclear-armed Israel, because they do have nuclear weapons,” Greene told Steve Bannon on his podcast.
“And we already give them $3.4 billion* every single year in the state, from the State Department. $3.4 billion every single year. They don’t need another $500 million in our defense budget. That’s for the American people’s defense,” she added.
Greene’s amendment received support from Republican Thomas Massie and four progressive Democrats, Al Green, Summer Lee, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. The vote was 422-6. The amendment would have removed the $500 million in military assistance to Israel that is approved through the defense spending bill.
In her speech on the House floor, Greene argued, “Israel is a nuclear-armed nation. They can defend themselves. They have universal healthcare and subsidized college. Meanwhile, Americans are $37 trillion in debt,” she said.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez received criticism for voting against the administration. In a statement on her vote, she wrote on X, “Marjorie Taylor Greene’s amendment does nothing to cut off offensive aid to Israel nor end the flow of US munitions being used in Gaza. Of course I voted against it.”
Caitlin Johnstone responded to AOC’s tweet, “I didn’t give the mass shooter guns and ammunition, I just bought him a bulletproof vest so nobody could stop the massacre.”
*NOTE: The actual amount the US gives Israel every year is much higher: $23 BILLION.
