PALESTINIAN ELDERS’ INVISIBLE DEATHS: Approximately 1,200 elderly Palestinians have died in the past two months due to Israel’s starvation policy, malnutrition, and lack of medical care. Euro-Med Monitor’s field team documented the deaths of dozens of elderly people in displacement camps due to starvation, malnutrition, or lack of treatment. Due to lack of a clear reporting mechanism, many of these deaths were recorded as natural causes.

ISRAEL’S NEW MEASURES NOT MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Israel implemented several new measures Sunday, including daily humanitarian pauses, airdropped aid, and humanitarian corridors for UN aid trucks, in response to international pressure mounted to alleviate the hunger crisis. But humanitarians say that behind the scenes, new bureaucratic obstacles continue to be thrown up that prevent them from importing aid into Gaza (continue reading here).

NOTE: In spite of his concessions to “improve” the humanitarian situation, Israeli PM Netanyahu insists that there is no starvation in Gaza: “Israel is presented as though we are applying a campaign of starvation in Gaza,” Netanyahu said on July 27. “What a bold-faced lie. There is no policy of starvation in Gaza. And there is no starvation in Gaza.” But Netanyahu’s statements do not hold upunder scrutiny. Even President Trump does not believe him.

SEVERE SHORTAGE OF FOOD ENCOURAGES LOOTING: Over the past four days, 269 aid trucks have entered Gaza, and most of them were looted by hungry crowds. Looting aid is not very shocking. It has been a predictable outcome for a prolonged period of a starving population that has been denied access to water, food, and medical supplies. According to the UN, Gaza needs at least 500-600 aid trucks on a daily basis. With regular deliveries of appropriate quantities of food, looting would become unnecessary.

ISRAELI MILITARY FINDS ITSELF NOT GUILTY* OF KILLING AID SEEKERS: The IDF said a preliminary probe found no wrongdoing or IDF-related casualties in a Wednesday incident that local health officials said killed 48 Gazans seeking aid. “The forces fired dispersal shots in the area, not at the gathering, in response to a perceived threat,” the IDF’s statement read. “Initial investigation shows that no casualties were reported as a result of IDF fire; the details of the incident are still being investigated.”

*NOTE: Israel’s self-investigations – on the rare occasions when they do take place – consistently whitewash its crimes and fail to appropriately punish the perpetratorsIsrael has a long track record of lying.

WEST BANK/EAST JERUSALEM, AND ISRAEL NEWS AND HEADLINES:

(For background on the West Bank, read this and thisFor information on the significance of Israeli settlers in the West Bank, read this and this.)

ALLEGED KILLER FACES MILDER CONSEQUENCES THAN ALLEGED STONE-THROWERS*: Following the killing on Tuesday of Palestinian Awdah Hathaleen by an Israeli settler, five Palestinians were detained for allegedly throwing stones at the scene. According to their attorney, they were arrested at the scene after being identified by the same settler, Yinon Levi, who is suspected of killing Hathaleen. The Palestinians’ detention has been extended by eight days, while Levi has been released to house arrest.

ISRAELI SOLDIER SHOOTS STONE-THROWER – NOT A TEXTBOOK CASE: A reserve soldier saw masked suspects throwing stones at vehicles, and fired warning shots into the air. When the suspects began throwing stones at him, he shot at one of the suspects and wounded him. The wounded man was an Israeli settler. The IDF said the incident is under investigation and the soldier has been taken in for questioning.

*NOTE: Palestinians who are caught throwing stones – or suspected of doing so – can face up to a 20-year sentence in the Israeli prison system, or death if Israeli forces shoot at them; Israeli settlers, who also regularly throw stones (as in this incident) regularly face little or no consequencesfor the same act.

ISRAELI ARMY ADMITS TO 500 CEASEFIRE VIOLATIONS IN LEBANON:The Israeli army admitted on Tuesday to carrying out hundreds of violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon, stating it has launched around 500 airstrikes since the truce came into effect in November 2024. According to the Israeli daily Haaretz [Hebrew language], the military described its violence on Lebanon since the ceasefire began as “achievements.” The strikes, carried out over 243 days, reportedly killed more than 230 Hezbollah fighters.

ISRAELI SETTLERS MARCH TO GAZA BORDER, CHANT “GAZA, OURS FOREVER”: Hundreds of Israeli settlers marched to the Gaza border on Wednesday, calling for Jewish settlement in the Palestinian territory, a demonstration that comes amid reports that the Netanyahu government is considering annexation. According to AFP, the demonstrators chanted “Gaza, ours forever” and declared that the “way to defeat Hamas is to take back our land.” Daniella Weiss, leader of the radical settler Nachala movement, said she had 1,000 families ready to move in (more here).

OTHER NEWS AND HEADLINES:

The New York Times Repeated Israeli Claims of Hamas Stealing Aid Without Evidence

In 61 articles related to Gaza’s hunger crisis the New York Times published since January, 23 of them included Israel’s accusations that Hamas was stealing aid. Nine of those stories did not include opposing statements refuting Israel’s claim.

Twelve articles of the 61 analyzed by The Intercept cited concerns about Hamas diverting aid without an explicit accusation. At the time of publication, the Times had not added a correction or update to these stories to indicate that the claims were false.

None of the articles provided any evidence in support of the claims except for the comments of Israeli officials, who work for a government that has repeatedly spread disinformation, including in its record-breaking fatal attacks on journalists, aid workers, and children.

The U.N. agency tasked with distributing aid in Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, has maintained for months that it has received no specific evidence that Hamas or other armed groups were diverting its humanitarian aid in Gaza (continue reading here).

Sanders bills to kill Israel arms transfers die in two Senate votes

On Wednesday, the US Senate voted on S.J.Res.34 and S.J.Res.41, voting 24-73 and 27-70 respectively. Both bills were sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders.

S.J. Res.34 sought to block the sale of some bombs and some of the logistics and technical support services related to them, and S.J.Res.41 would have prevented the sales of tens of thousands of automatic rifles, to Israel.

Although these resolutions failed, they received more votes to discharge than previous resolutions to block arms sales to Israel. The Senate overwhelmingly rejected two other Sanders-led resolutions to block weapons to Israel back in April, voting against S.J. Res. 33 in a 15-82 vote and against S.J. Res. 26 in a 15-83 vote (continue reading here).

‘Utter disaster’: Critics slam Starmer’s use of Palestinian statehood as bargaining tool

Israel, and especially Netanyahu, have consistently blocked attempts by Palestinians to create a state. President Trump ended the decades-long (but empty) US policy of calling for a two-state solution. If world leaders truly want to offer Gazans a good life outside Gaza, the just solution would be toreturn them to their homes in historic Palestine.
