At least 35 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza residential block
At least 35 people have been killed and dozens of others were wounded in an Israeli attack on a residential block in Gaza Cityâs Shujayea neighborhood, medical sources told Al Jazeera.
The Gaza Health Ministry said it expected the death toll from Wednesdayâs attack in northern Gaza to rise, as civil defense teams and residents dug frantically to locate dozens of missing residents believed to be trapped under the rubble.
The Israeli military said the raid targeted a senior Hamas fighter, but did not give his name, claiming that it had taken several steps to reduce harm to civilians.
Ayub Salim, 26, a resident of Shujayea, told Al Jazeera that some victims were âtorn to piecesâ by the attack with âmultiple missilesâ that sent shrapnel flying.
Most of the victims had come to live in the block after being âforcibly displacedâ, he said.
Mahmoud Basal, a civil defence spokesperson, said that it was very difficult to reach the âdozens of peopleâ trapped under the rubble as rescuers lacked the appropriate equipment as a result of Israelâs blockade of the Palestinian territory, adding that more than 60 people were wounded.
Reporting from Deir el-Balah, Al Jazeeraâs Hind Khoudary said a doctor at Gaza Cityâs al-Ahli Arab Hospital had told her that medics lacked the medication to treat âburnedâ victims. The hospital is in urgent need of blood supplies.
Paramedics, already struggling with a lack of fuel and medical supplies, had been unable to reach people in Shujayea because of the scale of destruction, with rubble on the roads preventing them from reaching those in need.
Further reporting from Al Jazeera: Many of the dead are women and children who were sheltering inside. About 55 Palestinians were critically injured and transferred to nearby al-Ahli Hospital.
The Israelis destroyed more than 30 houses and buildings.
The army not only dropped multiple bombs, but these were also âearthquake bombsâ that shook the very foundation of nearby buildings, destroying the majority of them. Entire residential buildings have been turned into ruin.
Civil defense crews have officially ceased their operation in the area because it was getting too risky for them to stay at the site, as drones hovered above them.
They had to stop their operation, and evacuate immediately, leaving many people under the rubble at risk of losing their lives.
Israeli threatens to expel 970 pilots over Gaza war protest
Israeli Air Force commanders threatened Wednesday to expel approximately 970 personnel â including pilots, officers and soldiers â if they do not withdraw their signatures from a letter demanding an end to the war in the Gaza Strip, local media reported.
Israeli daily Haaretz reported that âabout 970 aircrew members, some in active reserve service, signed the letter opposing the war but not calling for refusal to serve.â
In recent days, senior Air Force leaders made personal phone calls to reservists who endorsed the message, urging them to retract their support, the outlet said. Commanders informed the reservists they face dismissal if they refuse to comply, according to Haaretz.
Following the threat, only 25 signatories withdrew their names, while eight others requested to add their signatures.
The letterâs signatories, including senior Air Force officers and pilots, argue that âthe fighting in Gaza serves political interests, not security ones.â
Netanyahu responded to the letter by calling the signatories a âradical and marginal groupâ whose objective is to âtopple the government.â

New Jersey Governor, Senator demand answers from Israel after Palestinian-American killed by Israeli military in West Bank
Local leaders in New Jersey are demanding that Israel thoroughly investigate the killing of a 14-year-old Palestinian-American dual citizen by IDF troops in the West Bank on Sunday.

Amer Mohammed Saada Rabee, originally from Saddle Brook, New Jersey, was shot and killed near Turmus Ayya. The Israeli army stated that he and two other teens had been throwing rocks at passing cars, and released a 10-second video purporting to show the incident.
The head of the Turmus Ayya local council, Lafi Shalabi, rejected the armyâs characterization of the events, and said that the boys were âpicking almonds.â
He also said that there were settlers in the area at the time who also fired shots, making it unclear whether the gunfire came from the army. The IDF did not comment on whether there were indeed settlers in the area at the time.

Trump says Israel would âleadâ potential military strike against Iran
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Israel would be the âleaderâ of a potential military strike against Iran if Tehran doesnât give up its nuclear weapons program.
Trump made the comments ahead of this weekendâs scheduled talks involving U.S. and Iranian officials in the Middle East sultanate of Oman. Trump earlier this week said the talks would be âdirectâ while Iran has described the engagement as âindirectâ talks with the U.S.
âIf it requires military, weâre going to have military,â Trump said. âIsrael will obviously be very much involved in that. Theyâll be the leader of that. But nobody leads us, but we do what we want to do.â
NYT: U.S. Commanders Worry Yemen Campaign Will Drain Arms Needed to Deter China
U.S. commanders planning for a possible conflict with China are increasingly concerned that the Pentagon will soon need to move long-range precision weapons from stockpiles in the Asia-Pacific region to the Middle East, congressional officials say.
That is because of the large amount of munitions that the United States is using in a bombing campaign in Yemen ordered by President Trump.
U.S. readiness in the Pacific is also being hurt by the Pentagonâs deployment of warships and aircraft to the Middle East after the Israel-Gaza war began in October 2023 and after Houthi militia forces in Yemen started attacking ships in the Red Sea to support the Palestinians, the officials say.
The American ships and aircraft, as well as the service members working on them, are being pushed at what the military calls a high operating tempo. Even basic equipment maintenance becomes an issue under those grinding conditions (continue reading here).

Mike Huckabee, longtime Israel supporter, confirmed as US ambassador
Mike Huckabee, a staunch ideological ally of Israel, was confirmed by the Senate to serve as the United Statesâ ambassador to the country on Wednesday.

The former Arkansas governor and two-time presidential candidate was tapped by President Donald Trump for the post just after the November election. He has never previously worked in a diplomatic or national security role for any U.S. administration.
Huckabee has been a longtime supporter of Israel, which he has said is rooted in his religious faith. Heâs visited Israel more than 100 times. Heâs also encouraged Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
While running for president in 2008, Huckabee claimed âthereâs really no such thing as a Palestinian.â
Last June, he argued against a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, telling NewsNation in an interview that the militant group was ânot capable of having an honorable negotiation.â
Huckabee was confirmed by a vote of 53-46, with Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) the lone Democrat voting for his confirmation.
âCongratulations to my dear friend @GovMikeHuckabee upon being confirmed as the next ambassador of the United States to Israel,â Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who visited Trump at the White House this week, said in a post on X. This is a great day for the Israeli â American alliance.â
Huckabee responded in kind. âThank you @IsraeliPM and I look forward to working with you as we pray for the âPeace of Jerusalem!,ââ he wrote.
Poll finds most Americans hold unfavorable views of Israel
More than half of all Americans hold unfavorable views of Israel, according to a recently published poll that comes as Israel resumes its sweeping offensive on the besieged Gaza Strip.
In all, 53% of American adults express somewhat or very negative views of Israel, a sharp increase from the 42% who were downbeat on Israel in March 2022 when the question was last asked, according to the survey from the Pew Research Center. Moreover, Tuesdayâs poll found that the share of respondents who voiced very unfavorable views about Israel has nearly doubled to 19% from the last time the poll was taken.
Partisan divides over Israel continue with Democrats much more likely to hold unfavorable views of Israel, 69%, compared to the 37% share of Republicans who hold negative views. But among Republicans, those younger than 50 are now roughly about as likely to have a negative view of Israel as a positive one â 50% to 48%.
The survey was conducted March 24-30, about one week before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House. Less than one in three, 32%, of respondents said they had confidence in the Israeli leader (continue reading here).

Netanyahu says âexplosionâ of Iran nuclear program only acceptable path toward deal with US
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has demanded that any nuclear deal with Iran include the complete destruction of all of Iranâs nuclear facilities and equipment, implemented and supervised solely by the US.
In a video released before departing Washington on Tuesday, Netanyahu warned that a military strike should be considered if such terms are not met and Iran delays negotiations. âEveryone understands that. I discussed this at length with President Trump,â he said.
Macron: France to Recognize the State of Palestine amid Gaza âCrimeâ
French President Emmanuel Macron visited El Arish in Egypt on Tuesday to see refugees from Gaza with his own eyes. He then announced that France would recognize the State of Palestine, probably in June.
Mohamed Bouhafsi at French public television reports on remarks of French President Emannuel Macron on Gaza and the Palestine issue. Bouhafsi pointed out that Macron is the first time a leader had visited the frontier between Egypt and Palestine. He was accompanied by Egyptian President Abdelfattah al-Sisi. Macron went to a hospital, where he met many children who were victims of Israeli bombing raids.
Macron said, âMy presence is a way of saying that one does not have the right to forget Gaza. I saw, and it was overwhelming, children and adults. Some had a look that held something . . . beyond the pain of grief. When you havenât . . when, deep down, youâve gone beyond humanity and, when you want to survive.â
